Stunning American Airlines Plane sports Astrojet livery!
In a wonderfully retro move by American Airlines embracing nostalgia, American Airlines is showing one of its' 737-800's with Astrojet livery. The photo can be seen at this blog. I actually like the retro look and hope that I will be able to somehow see this airplane in person!

Cocaine Bust at Dulles Airport!
People! Don't try to smuggle drugs into the airport! Seriously! They will catch you. They will keep your drugs, and YOU WILL GO TO JAIL!
In the latest version of attempting to get drugs into the United States, a man entering into Dulles Airport from El Salvador was caught with appx. 4.5 pounds of Cocaine. Guess where he put the cocaine? Into instant soup packets! This is the second attempt that the police have caught, the first one being with chicken soup. The dog caught them both times.
Last year, attempts were made to get heroin into the US from El Salvador using Juice boxes. Also attempted was placing cocaine inside a chicken. Yet another reason to be careful of what you eat and where it comes from.
US Airways...not hiring new Flight Attendants, but force transferring as many as 89
Here is a shocking little blurb. US Airways flight attendants in Philadelphia (89 of them) are being told that they will have to transfer to the base in the Carolinas that is short staffed, but they are not looking to hire new flight attendants through their web site.
I am certain that more than one person in US Airways family will make the hard decision to leave a company that they work at in order to be able to stay in a place that some have been in for more than a decade. I do not see an upside to this, when, in my opinion, they could easily staff the base with newly hired employees, but, what do I know?
Per Request A Petition to Delta in regards to Paco and mis-routed children
My readers are on the ball. I have gotten many emails with this link in reference to a petition that is being created to Delta Airlines in reference to my story about Paco, the dog that was lost in transit to his new US home, and about the children that Delta mis-routed on flights.

Did you know that you can donate your unused miles to charities? Neither did I!
Did you know that some airlines allow you to donate your miles to charity? I did not know this, either.
I would like to see more airlines be a part of this as I think it is really worthwhile. If you are a frequent flier with an airline that is not listed on here, perhaps you can send them the link and ask if they participate. I will add other airlines as they become a part of this program, or if they are and it was not mentioned.
Florence Courington, flight attendant, still in court battle over DWI machine
Poor Florence Courington. She was a flight attendant with a spotless record, until one day, she was randomly selected to take part in a DWI screening test. She failed because the equipment was unable to give a reading on her test. Her airline, Northwest Airlines viewed that as a refusal, even though she spent over an hour with the tester, trying to get the machine to work.
She was offered to be on permanent probation, but declined. She was terminated.
She is among several hundred people who are asking for this machine's validity to be determined, and it is slowly moving through the court system.

Ohio Guard Changes Air Zone after near miss
Imagine that you are on a plane, relaxing, flying along, thinking about the things that you will do when you get to your destination. All of the sudden, two fighter jets come close enough to set off the cockpit alarms. I am betting that if you would have looked out the window, you might have been more than alarmed. The people in Ohio on board an Atlantic Southeast Airlines Commuter jet got to learn about that when two fighter jets got too close.
The pilots are being given additional training, and the air distance has been doubled from 2.5 miles to 5 miles airspace. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Man accosts Flight attendant. Suggests Sex, punches her in face when she refuses
I just want all of you to know that some of these stories are a little old because I have been holding onto them in my inbox so I could make sure and post them on this blog.
If you are a person that is prone to outburst of insanity or instability, perhaps you should not fly. I would love to know what the reaction of the wife was when all of this unfolded. I do not see how she could have stood by her man, but I would not be shocked to learn that indeed, that was the case. If you know anything more about this story, send me the link!
This one has me completely baffled. A Texas man on a Delta flight (I need to make a separate page for Delta, apparently) went to the back of the plane where the Delta flight attendant was seated and asked her to go with him to the lavatory and have sex with him. I do not think that he was asking very politely, because the flight attendant began yelling for help. He punched her then. In the face. He also punched a passenger who tried to help her. Interesting side note here: His wife was on the plane with him. His bail was set at $100,000.00 and I have not been able to find out anything else about this case. If you know anything, send me a link!
Let me explain something here. Flight Attendants are not sex toys. They are not air waitresses. They are there to save your butt, not kiss it. In the event of an emergency, those men and women are trained to do what it takes to get you off that plane and safely somewhere. The same goes for pilots.
I was on a flight a couple of years ago, and the two flight attendants working the flight happened to be good friends of mine. The one came over and was speaking to me. She was crouched down so as not to moon the passengers behind her. A male, seated in the seat across from mine pulled her hair and said "Very fine wife you have there, but I want some coffee". I thought that she was going to pop him one, but she smiled and told him that if he touched her again, she would make sure that his wife and his employer knew why he was leaving the airplane in handcuffs.

American Airlines training Managers to replace Flight Attandants
This is from May 26, 2010, but I want to follow it.

Making dangerous comments and threats on a plane is plain stupid.
I was in the airport about five years ago with a male friend of mine on the way to California from Dallas. We were very excited about the flight, happy to see some sights and have a little fun.
There were some kids behind us, mid to late teens who were horsing about, joking with one another and shoving at each other. Occasionally, they would shove into us, and we would clear our throats, say "Excuse me" loudly, and turn back around. They were not our favorite people.
There were some kids behind us, mid to late teens who were horsing about, joking with one another and shoving at each other. Occasionally, they would shove into us, and we would clear our throats, say "Excuse me" loudly, and turn back around. They were not our favorite people.
As we got into the security clearance area, we did all of the things that you are supposed to do: Take off your shoes, remove your laptop from the case, etc. It was a no-brainer in light of the incidents of September 11, 2001.
The kids behind us started joking to each other about having a bomb, about being a bomb, and about blowing one another up. It was irritating, but when they got to security, they were in for a rude awakening. The Department of Homeland Security took those boys aside for security reasons. I do not know what happened to them, but I do know that they were not on our flight to California.
Airport Security is nothing to joke around about. We all know that it is a nuisance at times, but the security that is in place is there to help you, and to make sure that we are all safe in the skies.
Here are a couple of tips to make your travels safer. (And mine.)
- This sounds like I am being funny, but I am not. If, for any reason, you carry a firearm on your person or in your belongings, remove it before you travel. This lady flight attendant was treated the same as any other passenger when she went through security, and now, her bad choice kept her from working her flight, and she has some legal issues to deal with.
- Do not make false comments or jokes about things you have on your person, on the plane, in your bags, in your checked luggage. This man, aged 75 was treated the same as any person of any age who would make such comments. They are treated very seriously.
- Report anything suspicious to someone appropriate. But do not make a false report.
- Look on the internet for what is and what is not allowed to be brought with you on board or checked onto a plane. Pack accordingly. Don't break the rules.
- You cannot board a US plane without proper identification. A list of that can be found on any US airline website as to what is accepted and what is not.
- If you are traveling with people who are prone to jokes and pranks, explain the seriousness of airport security to them.
- If you are traveling with someone who has a diminished mental capacity for any reason, let the ground crew (Gate Agent/Ticket Agent) know. You can sometimes note this to the airline via their toll-free numbers. Let the inflight crew know as well. A friend of mine has a mentally handicapped son who began screaming "Help Me! Help Me!" while seated on the plane. The flight attendant, thankfully, knew beforehand about his disability, and was able to assist wonderfully.
The skies will never feel as safe to us as they did in the time before the September 11 terrorist attacks. Last year, at Christmas, a man tried to blow up a US plane. Thankfully, he was stopped. Air safety is something that is very important and cannot be taken for granted.
Airline security is something that we, as Americans for the most part did not have to deal with before 09/11/2001. It is something that we should be honored to have now to keep us safe.
American Airlines AGAIN considering selling off American Eagle
This is a week old, but I did want to share it. American Airlines is once again considering the possibility of selling off American Eagle.
The last time that AA thought of this was in 2007. Although it was 3 years ago, I think that AA is doing everything that they can to raise their profitability. I debate whether divesting itself of American Eagle is a prudent choice, but I am not in the know like the executives at AA are.
Transportation Department wants airlines to reveal ALL fees and airfares
In the latest news about regulations of the airlines, Congress wants for the airline industry to reveal all of their fees in a simple and easy to understand format. Congress is arguing that the current billing structures listed by most airlines as confusing at best.
Delta puts two kids on wrong flights, but issues apology
In a bit of shocking news that I got today, Delta airlines confused two children. One child was supposed to go to Boston, and the other to Cleveland, but they were sent on each others' flights.
Delta did issue an apology though, as well as refund both families for their travel costs, and issue credits for future travels with Delta.
I am a bit confused about this. I thought that non-flying parents were allowed into the boarding area with their children if they were below a certain age. The one child was 9 years old, which seems a little young to have let the child be alone in the gate area without a parent.

Paco has a Facebook Page
Paco, the dog that was lost by Delta Airlines has a Facebook page. I have gotten several emails from folks, and I am happy to share the link for those that are interested.
Seeing as it it coming up on three weeks since the little dog has been seen, I am saddened for the loss of the dog, but I still hold hope that the pooch will be found.
Spirit offers incentives for public to return to flying with them
Spirit Airlines is back up and running, and they are offering incentives for the public to return to flying with them.
As of this writing, Spirit is offering $50.00 off all posted flights to anyone. They also have a club membership. For $39.95 per calender year, members get chances at buying airfare for as low as a penny. It is called $9.00 fare club. I really do not have any more information than that. I have sent off an email to Spirit with some questions that I have, and as soon as I have answers back, I will post more details.
Are you travelling with your pets? Some things that you need to know.
I have pets, and, from time to time, I have had a need to travel with them when I was on the go. I will be using dog or pet here, but I know that there are other pets, too.
Travelling with pets can be a huge headache, and, as John Travolta and his family learned, sometimes, in a freak accident, a huge heartache. A pet named Paco was lost on a Delta flight, and to this moment, has never been recovered. Paco has been seen in a nearby apartment complex area, in which he has made friends with two other dogs.
There are even pet transport companies, but, to be honest, I have never used them.
If you need to travel with your pet, you should be mindful that accidents can and do happen. No one likes to think about their precious pets as being lost, but it does happen.
Here are some things that you can do before you travel with your pet.
- Call the airlines. Determine what the restrictions are on your pet traveling in the cabin with you, since in the cabin is assuredly safer than in the pet area of the cargo hold. If your pet is small enough, then decide on if you would like your pet to be in the cabin with you.
- Make sure that all shots are up to date. If your pet DID get out, and was hurt or bitten/injured, it would help if they were up to date on all of their shots.
- At the vet's office, ask if your pet is strong enough/healthy enough to be able to make the trip.
- Mark the pet and the pets' container with all of your contact information. Make sure that your pet has all of their rabies tags and other tags that may be needed in your area.
- Put a contact number on the pet tag. If the place you are traveling to has a different contact number, get a separate tag made. "Rags. Detroit contact Aunt Sally 555-555-1212" is sufficient.
- Check the pet carrier. Is it still strong? Is it still sturdy? Do you have locks for the carrier?
- Add photos to the sides, top, and bottom of the carrier of your pet. DO NOT BLOCK AIR HOLES. Make sure that they are taped down securely.
- In the area on the top of the kennel, place an additional paper with all of the information about the dog.
- If the dog is shy, or barks, make sure that you tell the person at the gate about that.
- If the dog needs medication, speak to your vet about missing a dose.
- Stay with the pet until the last possible second. Let the cabin crew know that you have a pet checked on the plane. Ask if you can get off the plane first. Sometimes, you will be told no, and sometimes, you will be told yes.
- Have your pet micro chipped. Collars can break, dogs can get free, but the chip will go with them where ever they go.
- Call the airport where you will be arriving, give them your travel information, and let them know that you have a pet traveling with you. Also be asked to be transferred to the desk for the airline that you are flying, and let them know that your VIP (Very Important Pet) is going to be on your flight.
- Ask the airline what the temperature is where the pets are. Is your pet warm natured or cold natured? Consider this when traveling with your pet.
- If your pet gets stressed in unusual or new circumstances, talk to the vet about medicine for traveling. It will make your pet drowsy, but less nervous.
Here are some things to consider if you are traveling with your pet in the cabin:
- Yes, your pet is cute. They cannot come out of their carrier, no matter how cute they are, while they are on the plane. They must be able to fit into a carrier that stows into the seat space on the floor in front of you. Measure it close. My first carrier was too big by one inch. It was a huge hassle, but I got it to fit. My dog was not delighted.
- Is your dog a barker or a whiner? Talk to the vet about medicine. No one wants to hear your pet whine, bark, whimper and call out during the flight.
- Don't feed your pooch scraps from your plate on the plane. Dealing with pet vomit in the sky is not fun.
- You will have to remove your pet from the carrier and the carrier will have to go through the x-ray machine, and then you and your pet will walk through the metal scanner. Bring a leash for this. My normally calm dog decided to try and sprint past me when I set her down, and I got to clean up puppy pee. Bring paper towels in case this happens. You are responsible for the mess your pet makes. If I would not have had her on a leash, I do not know what would have happened. Put the leash on the pet before you let them out of the carrier. This is a new place with tremendous amounts of stimulus.
- Some airports have pet areas/relief areas. Call ahead and see if yours does, if not, take a nice long walk before you go to the airport. Let them out (on the leash) at the airport, too if there is a nice grassy area.
- Get your pets' nails trimmed and filed before you leave. Anxious pets can injure themselves if they try to claw out of their cage. My Chihuahua caused permanent pigment loss damage to her nose from pushing against the carrier when I checked her in at the vet's office.
- If your pet is in the cabin with you, telling them "Shut Up" or similar things is not helping them to feel secure. Reach down and let them sniff your hand. My vet told me to put my used pillowcase in the carrier with my dog, and it worked like a charm. She circled it three times, sat down on the pillow case and went to sleep.
- Don't put too much crap in the carrier with the pet. Airline rules state that the pet must have room to stand, turn and sit down. Food is not a good idea of things to put in with your pet.
- Avoid LOUD toys. No one wants to hear your pets squeaky toy, their loud chewing, their electronic toys, or similar. No one wants to hear the ball with all the bells in it, or the electronic toys that say things. It is not cute, it is irritating.
- Try to get your dog out of the kennel as soon as possible when you land. Do so on a leash, though!
Happy Tails to you!
British Airways on Strike!
I guess I am a little bit confused because I thought that BA had already gone on strike. It looks as though another strike is in the works. Hopefully, travelers will not be too inconvenienced by the strike.
Airlines lose 25 million bags per year.
Airlines lose 25 million bags per year. Wow. 1 in 100 passengers globally will lose at least one of their bags.
I have some tips that have greatly reduced the amount of bags that I have lost.
My list is not all inclusive, I am merely telling you what works for me.
- Don't jam your bag too full. It heightens the liklihood that you will have a luggage failure. Those zippers and closures are meant to close the suitcase, not hold it like a pressurized capsule. I have seen MANY times as I wait for my luggage, the sad little plastic tubs containing pieces and items from the interior of someone's suitcase.
- Put labels in everything and on everything. Each pocket, throw a business card in. Does it have a number you can be reached at both where you are going to and where you are coming from? I write the flight numbers and itinerary down in a document, print it out, and put it in the top of all of the bags.
- Every individual bag inside your bag should also be labeled. A friend of mine who used to work in cargo told me that one time, a set of suitcases popped open, and a camera came tumbling out. But which of the suitcases did it come from? Easy to determine. The owner had put a luggage tag on the camera case.
- Get to the airport early. Running late? That luggage has to be checked, inspected, loaded onto some cargo thing, and then loaded onto the plane. There may be some steps that I do not even know about, too. But, be aware. All of that stuff takes time.
- Check all of the parts of your suitcase. Zippers or closures still work? Wheels still turn? Handles and all still hold? I found out in China that I brought the wrong suitcase with me when the wheel platform collapsed. Luckily, I knew about it before we boarded the plane, and I was able to buy a new one.
- Make sure that the information on your luggage tag (your contact information) is CURRENT and correct. My mom had a tag with a phone number and address on the tag....from over 20 years ago. It only takes a second to update.
- This is a big one....remove ALL of the old airline issued city/airport code travel tags when you get home. Yes. it may make you feel cool to see all of the hang tags from the places that you have been, but, to a baggage handler, they don't have time to sort through those tags and see which one corresponds to the trip that you are on.
- What color is your bag?
- What size is your bag?
- What are some of the contents of your bag?
- Who is the manufacturer of the bag?
- Is there anything distinctive about your bag?
- Are there any medications in your bag?
Remember, don't get huffy if you lose your bag. The poor agent at the desk is having a hard enough time already. Becoming angry is not going to get your bag found!

Continental offers non-stop service between Houston and Lagos, Nigeria
Continental will begin offering non-stop service between Houston, Texas, and Lagos, Nigeria beginning in November of 2010. I really think that this non-stop service will be a hit among passengers, and I bet that it will generate a lot of additional revenue for Continental as people traveling to Lagos will fly in from different places in the United States. Good move for Continental to generate a great revenue.
Southwest Airlines finds dozens of human heads in luggage bound for Dallas
Southwest Airlines finds dozens of human heads in luggage bound for Dallas. Can you imagine being the person who was checking the bags when you made this little gruesome discovery? I think that I would have to have some compensation for the stress I would have suffered. I am not being sarcastic, and I am not joking. I cannot even comprehend the amount of shock that my system would have taken at finding human heads in someone's bag/luggage/claimed container.

Canadian Man fined for smoking on plane
As I mentioned in an earlier post, we all know that you cannot smoke on a plane! A Canadian man was fined 1000.00 Canadian dollars this week for smoking aboard a plane. I wish I could say that the law was new, but alas, such was not his luck.
I am sure that he will not do this again.

Man Pleads Guilty to punching pregnant wife on board plane
When this story first came out, I was shocked at the thought of it. On board a plane, a man began to verbally, and then physically assault his wife, who was then pregnant with the couple's third child.
He was moved to a different section of the plane, but found the wife, and again began to berate her and hit her, even striking her in the abdomen.
This week, he pled guilty to the charges, and he could get six months time in prison (Federal!) for the charges. The woman has since reconciled with him, and the child is now a thriving baby. I will post as soon as information comes about in this. Unbelievable.

Being Safe or...Being Silly?
A doctor on flight comments on being denied the ability to assist a passenger while on board a flight. I understand the doctors' point of view, 100 percent. He went to medical school, and as such, knows scads and scads more things that the average Joe or Jane Public will. I do not know why a flight attendant would have denied the use of oxygen on the plane, unless there were some liability issues. I know that when I have been on a plane and there was a need for a doctor, luckily, one was present, and the doctor was allowed to do her thing. There was no denial of service to him, or to the lucky passenger who was able to receive care. How about you? Do you think that the Flight Attendant acted correctly in this situation?

Patti DeLuna! American Airlines Hero!
Patti DeLuna has been getting a lot of super positive press lately, and rightfully so. The 61 year old flight attendant, with more than a decades' experience as such held a commercial pilots' license from 20 years ago, although she never flew the big ones.
The pilot made a call on the intercom asking if there were any commercial pilots on board.
No one came forward, so Patti went forward to the cockpit and told them that she held a license-- from 20 years ago. She was the only one that they had, so she was sent into the seat of the first officer, and he, the first officer was sent to a seat in the cabin. Her first question was "Where are the brakes?"
American Airlines has cause to be very proud of Ms. DeLuna for fearlessly being a part of a solution. She stated in interviews to the press that she only wanted to be a part of the team! I think that she succeeded!

Best Crisp Air. For when it really is better in the air up there.
Congress is talking about bringing back air regulation. I wish that I could say that I was surprised, but looking at the epic climbs and falls of the airline industry, I am not even merely startled. Huffington Post Congress talking dereg is derailed.
Re-regulating the airline industry is something that is needed, but what are the issues/areas that need to be regulated? That is where the grand debate is. What parts of the airline industry need to be monitored and which ones need to be left free. What did deregulation do? It changed the way that the airlines were allowed to price, the routes that they were allowed to run, and entry onto the plane.
I remember as a much younger person, sitting in the back section of the plane so that my mom could smoke her world famous Winston cigarettes. Once, I even asked the stewardess if I could move the little portable placard that denoted where the smoking section started forward a couple of seats so that mom could take drags off her precious smokes. It was a done deal, and there were no shrieks or yells from other passengers. It was simple and quick.
In 1991, Smoking was outlawed on planes, and there were protests, but, like everything else, people became used to the change, and we all now understand that you do not smoke on planes. Okay. Most of us understand that you do not smoke on planes, but there are those who insist on trying to beat the system so that they can have one more puff while on board. Smoking is actually allowed still in some places on their flights.
Now, there is a place where citizens can express their opinions on all of the air events that are an occurrence. There is even a small movement that is looking to ban peanuts in the air because of the severe allergies that can be life threatening for those affected with this disorder.
With deregulation, many things changed in the airline industry. Airline rates were allowed to climb and fall, and there were many other changes that happened. Some of them were good, and some of them were bad..
One of the bad issues of deregulation is that to create traffic flow to their airports, many small airports did nothing to attract multiple carriers to an airport once they had one carrier. This allowed for exorbitant fees to be charged to many of these rural connections, with the reflection being seen in very high ticket prices. To get an idea of this pricing strategy, look at smaller cities in your state that have an airport. A prime example of this is Elko, NV. Check out the pricing from Elko, NV to anywhere, and then, check the same pricing from Salt Lake City, UT. The difference can be staggering in the pricing. To drive to Salt Lake City from this small city in Nevada is only 2 hours (appx) so, I am sure that a good many of the residents there make the drive in order to save several hundred dollars. Deregulation allowed this to happen, by not forcing another carrier to grab a line there in the city, so Frontier has Elko at their mercy. I am sure that there are many other cities out there with the same situation happening, I just happen to have friends in Elko, and they have told me of the airline pricing situation.
I think that as we Americans look at deregulation versus regulation, there needs to be a long hard look at what is working, and what is not, and, if it is working, then leave it alone.
