Maggots on a plane

Check out the video link if you would like to see a video of the maggots that were on board a recent US flight.
I have heard it all. Maggots on a plane. Passengers were also saying that there were small flies on board the plane, and that the maggots were falling on top of them via the overhead bins.

It was said that spoiled meat was the cause, but the creator of the linked video said that there was no smell of contaminated meat, and she was in the area from which the maggots were located in.

The US Airways flight was brought back, passengers unloaded, where it was then  pulled out of service and fumigated.  Makes my skin crawl thinking about it.

Australian JetStar passenger tells fellow passengers that "There is a bomb on this plane" in order to get off plane faster

In Australia, a passenger on JetStar told fellow passengers that there was a bomb on the plane, because he felt that it would make them get off the plane faster, and he was in a rush to get off the plane.

He was fined 4000 Australian dollars for the incident, and the incident was recorded on his record.

Also in that same article, a Japanese man was fined 1000.00 Australian dollars for striking a flight attendant.

Just goes to show that bad passengers are global.

United Airlines saved 1,400 gallons of fuel on a transatlantic flight

In startlingly GOOD news, United Airlines made the announcement that they were able to save appx. 1,400 gallons of jet fuel. This is a very significant savings, and all of the things that they were doing on this flight by reading the article.
I find this news by United to be very encouraging of using technology that we currently have to reduce the cost to the daily operations of the airlines, perhaps return some revenue to the stockholders, and finally, not have to increase fees so quickly to air customers.

I would love to know what the average number of paying customers versus non rev, miles upgrades, etc is. If you know, email me and send me the link!

Admittedly Rotund Writer Ired for being removed from Exit row due to seatbelt extension.

A writer who is based out of Detroit was denied access to being able to sit in a favored spot by him, the exit row, due to the size of his girth, and the fact that he was using a lapbelt/seatbelt extension device.
He wrote an article about his experience, which you can read about. But, kind reader, you can read my take on it right here.

People who sit on the exit row are to be able bodied passengers. (ABP) Able bodied means that you are able to assist opening the exit door, and, further assist flight crew in the event of an emergency. An excellent article about ABP can be found here, and you really should look at the article, it is a good read.

Flying millions of miles does not entitle you to sit on the emergency row. Although the emergency row seats do offer more leg room, it is for a very somber reason. In the event that the plane makes an unscheduled landing (crashes) those wide spaces are to facilitate getting as many people out of the plane as quickly as possible.

ABPs may also be asked to help out. Hold the slide, help with the life rafts, and many more things. There are so many reasons that ABPs are a valuable tool that cabin and cockpit crew are trained on how to determine who becomes ABPs.

The writer of the story that I am referring to says that the flight attendants "goose stepped" back to him after a conference in the front. I don't care if they cha-cha-ed, Samba-ed, goosestepped or simply walked back. If you are not seen as a safe person to place in a position that could be very important, then, for the safety of the crew, other passengers, and yourself, you should not be seated in the exit row. The exit row is an evacuation row, not a seat due you because of privilege.

In a world where more people are large than ever before, comforts for them is something that I have written about on this very blog. I appreciate the sensitivities of the larger person, but not at the cost of my own safety. Complying with the directives of the flight and cabin crew is a Federal law. The fact that no other flight attendants have asked this gentleman to move from the exit row is not something I can speak on. The fact that he was asked to do so in order to place an ABP there is something I applaud.

Flight Attendant Arrested for trying to smuggle drugs!

London, England. A South African Airlines air hostess, Elphia Dlamini was found going through customs at Heathrow airport with over $200,000 (USD) worth of cocaine.
Also found on the flight were 4 persons who had secreted away on the flight.

Airline Stocks slowly climb up

Airline stocks are slowly climbing back up as airlines make changes to increase their revenue, such as charging for checked bag fees, meals in flight, and American Airlines now charging for the right to board ahead of everyone else in coach, it seems as though the airlines are doing everything that they can do to return revenue to stock holders.

United Airlines,  is now sitting strong at appx. 21.00 per share.

Are you using all of your resources at hand?

When you are trying to accomplish a task, it is sometimes easier if you have friends and connections helping you.
A friend of mine is trying to get a job as a chef, and she is having no luck in her search. I suggested that she join linked in and see if some of her friends that she already knows would be able to give her a hand.

Social networks are not just for socializing. When I was overseas last year, the trip went horribly wrong, and I needed a way to have somewhere to stay while I regrouped. A social network that I was a part of built a safety net for me when I was making my path back to the United States. It was pretty awesome, to say the least, to think that I was being hosted in a home that was owned by a friend of mine in Europe.

Twitter is a great tool for telling people what is going on in your life....if your readers see what you are writing. A lot of my friends use Twitter. I have a twitter account, but to me, it is a lot time consuming, and I do not go there. If you do, a shout out can have instant results. I am working on being better on Twitter, and I will be adding it to my phone....when I get back to Dallas! Here in rural Arizona, I am afraid that it would kill my battery life. Once I get back to Dallas, I think that Twitter will be something that I am able to use. A little caution...some of the news feeds on Twitter run all day long, just like the news, and you may want to think about that before you add them to your feed.

All of the social networks that are out there are being used by many to create connections, find jobs, find places to stay, and many more things.

A pal of mine who is a flight attendant uses some of her social networks to connect with people when she is in different places all over the globe. She has had a really great time with her social networks, and whenever she is in a new town, she will see what events are going on while she is there. This amazing woman has sipped coffee at the park in Paris where the Eiffel Tower is with people that she had, prior to that, only met online. She has shared vodka with soldiers in eastern Europe when the train they were on was waiting for tracks to be cleared ahead of them. When one of them came to Chicago, her family was able to host them, even though she was out of town when they were there.

Which is another thing about social networks. If you get something out of your network, don't be a greedy person. Give back.  Return the favor. Take pictures, and share them. Goodness is something that we can all be a part of.

I am updating all of my social networks this week, and I look forward to you doing the same.
If I am in your town, or you are in mine, maybe we can have a beverage together in some local place! Fun!

Lufthansa and Pilots reach agreement in labor issue!

Does it seem like lately every single airline out there has a division on strike? Maybe it is just me.
The latest agreement between pilots and their company is Lufthansa.
Agreeing to a pay freeze until 2011, the pilots will be able to keep their jobs.

All of the agreements took place in Frankfurt, Germany.

Alaska Airlines expands its' routes

Pilot Drops Trousers to his ankles in Brazil

Oh the things that come across my desk. A US United Airlines pilot in Brazil was asked to remove his belt from his pants and go through the security process again. He laughed and dropped his trousers to his ankles.

Brazil is not a place to disregard the orders and requests of the security and police there. In the past, a pilot was fined $13,000 for flipping off a security officer when he was ordered to allow them to photograph him upon entry into the country.

Mesa Airlines, one an up and coming giant now must shrink to simply survive

Mesa Airlines, sometimes in the past compared to Southwest Airlines during their much younger days, now is forced to shrink dramatically in order to survive. This article points out the negotiations that they are attempting in order to expand a contract due to expire in two years in order to preserve 3,200 jobs.

Continental Emergency landing in San Antonio due to cabin pressure loss

Continental Airlines this week was forced to make an emergency landing during a flight from Houston to Mexico was forced to make an emergency landing in San Antonio. The reason for the landing was that the plane lost cabin pressure.

You are not going to believe the next part. Some of the passengers were actually angry with the flight crew because they felt that they were not being kept up to date on what was going on.
My opinion? I think that the cockpit crew had more important things on their minds, like landing the plane instead of making little PA announcements, but that is only my two cents worth.
There is a video and the story here. I call "get over it" for the passengers who were complaining. They landed safely, after all, and that is the main goal of all of the airlines and crew in the world, and that goal was met.

The Music that you listen to

We all listen to music for different reasons. One of many reasons that people listen to music is for relaxation.

When we travel,  people like to listen to music for different sub-reasons. When I was traveling to Paris with a friend, we made sure that we were on rows with power ports, so that we could have access to charging our MP3 players, and playing songs that would help us go to bed, wake up, feel energized, etcetera, etcetera.

When you are traveling, do you have music that you like to listen to? A friend of mine has a play list that she likes to listen to from when she is getting ready to go to the airport all the way to when she is in line to get her rental car. It must be doing something for her, because she seems to be one of the few people that do not suffer from jet lag as bad as the rest of us do.

Here are a few of the songs that are in my "travel" play list that I thought I would share with you.
Some are fresh, some are classic, and some are old, but they are just suggestions!
Jams --Use your own good judgement for playing around other people! I don't know who your friends are, and I don't know your children!

  • "I like that" by Houston
  • "I gotta feelin' "  by Black Eyed Peas (The Club play mix is the one I like!)
  • "Hotel Room Service" by Pitbull NOT safe for playing around kids!
  • "Temperature" by Sean Paul
  • "Radio" by Flo Rida  (Everytime this song comes on, I am reminded of my tricked out Eddie Bauer Black on Black Expedition with Helo Skid Rims, premium leather custom seats, and a total bling feel to it. I even had Bling Machine embroidered on the seat backs. It was a bad ass big truck, and I still miss my baby.)
  • "Whatever you like" by T. I.
  • "Walk it Out" by Unk
  • "Baby got Back" by Sir Mix a Lot CLASSIC! I can recall singing this song back in the day with all of my pals, word for word, followed by the next on my playlist :
  • "Me So Horny" Beastie Boys
  • "Let it Rock" by Kevin Rudolf (Nice use of synthesizers)
  • "I know you want me" AKA Calle Ocho by Pitbull
  • "Hips don't lie" by Shakira
  • "Roll" by Flo Rida
  • "Stronger" by Kanye West
  • "I love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett, the First Lady of Rock in my opinion!
  • "Kiss me through the phone" by Soulja Boy
  • "Disco Inferno" by 50 Cent
  • "Move Shake Drop" by DJ Laz
  • "Country Grammar"  by Nelly (Classic fun rap)
  • "Gold Digger" by Kanye West
  • "Krazy" by Pitbull
  •  "Calabria" by Enur
  • "Beware of the Boys" by Panjabi MC
  • "Morena 08" by DJ Laz
  • "Party like a Rock Star" by Shop Boyz
  • "The Way that You Move" by Outkast
  • "Right Round" by Flo Rida
That is a little bit of a play list that you should listen to when you are in a rush. Nice beat, and will keep you jumping. I will be adding some of my other lists for play as I compile them from my MP3 player.
Enjoy the tunes!

Do you feel that power outlets are in short supply on a plane?

If you are flying coach on most planes in the United States, you are probably right. When I fly, I always go to Seat Guru and see if there is anyway that I can get a seat that has a power outlet.
Most of the flights that I am on in coach, I am firmly out of luck.
This article does a great job of pointing out all of the seating differences....based on seat cost. Not shocking, but it does show that you do get more than a nice seat when you pay more for your seat.

SkyWest is hiring! Height Requirements

SkyWest is hiring again. Be advised that there is a height requirement with them, and they do measure at the interview versus going what is on your drivers' license.
If you qualify and are interested, good luck!
